Back in John and Mary Margaret’s kitchen in Harbor Town, they took a break from sharing their story with Adele.

“Oh, my, what an incredible story. I wasn’t expecting that.” Adele said.

“Yes, it was. It is.” John said, looking at Mary Margaret with a slight smile.

“But, wait, it sounds like you two broke up at Ole Miss, and yet here you are—together? And I still don’t get what this has to do with Alzheimer’s.”

Mary Margaret got up to refill their coffee cups. “We’re going to need reinforcements. There’s a lot more to the story. Are you sure you have time for this?”

“Are you kidding me? I couldn’t possibly leave now. You didn’t really marry this Walker guy, did you? I have images in my head of John running down the aisle at the wedding to object, like Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate, to stop Katharine Ross from marrying Avery.” She smiled expectantly at both.

Mary Margaret looked at John but didn’t answer Adele’s question. Adele quickly filled the awkward silence: “Or maybe it was more like Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in The Notebook?” Adele became animated, standing up and walking around, tapping her fingers on the tabletop, her quizzical look intensifying into a frown. Suddenly she turned to Mary Margaret and said, “Oh my gosh, you—you don’t have Alzheimer’s . . . do you?”

Mary Margaret rose to meet Adele’s question face to face, but didn’t answer. John followed suit and stood and put his arm on Mary Margaret’s shoulder. “I think we should tell her the rest of the story now, don’t you?”

“Yes. But let’s go into the den where we can get comfortable. This is going to take a while.”
